Leicester's "Eco" Town Nightmare - brought to you by the Government and the Co-op In July 2007 the UK Government announced an initiative (Eco-towns Prospectus) for 10 new towns to be built, in a competition to be managed by the new Homes and Communities Agency. Out of approximately 60 proposals, 15 have now been selected by the Government. The Co-op's "Pennbury" proposal in Leicestershire is one of them. The Government has set a 12 week consultation period, persumably closing midway through June 08. We are still waiting for details. The Stoughton Farm Estate is particularly unsuited to such a huge scale development. Not only would it ruin valuable countryside and villages, but its location would also deprive City residents of vital green space, overload the road network, and threaten Leicester's regeneration. Read the full argument: What is wrong with the Pennbury proposal? (Last updated: 09 April 08) Halfway through the consultation the only information provided by the CO-OP is this: "An Eco Town for Leicestershire"
